Wow, look what we found in the Portola Reporter from over 70 summers ago. The story was written and the photo was taken during the summer of 1948 when we were a boys camp.

Today, Walton’s Grizzly Lodge is one of the oldest California summer camps, but in 1948 we were just getting started in Portola having moved from our original location in Lagunitas, California in 1943. Back in 1948, 35 boys would spend six weeks of their summer with us. Today, we have over 1,000 boys and girls each summer who are typically campers with us for a week or two of their summer.

In 1948 we may have allowed three in a canoe, boats to be closer than 10 feet apart and life jackets may not have been required, but like today at camp, our lake was certainly a focal point of a campers experience at Walton’s.

Many of the boys listed here as campers from 1948 have sent their children and in some cases their grandchildren to Walton’s. Do you recognize any of the names found here? We count 8 campers from this group who have sent their children and/or grandchildren to Walton’s.
