The Sierra Buttes, Mt. Elwell, Eureka Peak, Smith Peak and Beckwourth Peak are just a few of the excellent day hikes within a 45 minutes drive from Walton’s Grizzly Lodge that our campers have hiked over the years.

We are also fortunate to have a three and a half mile round trip “in camp hike” that campers can hike to in an afternoon while at camp. Named the “Bald Spot,” the hike takes campers across our lake, up the hill and through the woods to a small peak with a 360 degree view. Once at the top, Beckwourth Peak (seen in the background of the photo here), Mt. Elwell, Eureka Peak and Smith Peak can be seen as you pan left to right.

Our younger campers have the opportunity to experience this hike during our two week sessions. The hike can also been done as a group activity and a few years ago one of our CILT groups and their fearless leader adventured to the top of the peak on a full moon before spending the night at Peg Legs Cabin.

Our good neighbors over the hill from us at Grizzly Creek Ranch have been kind enough to allow our campers the opportunity to hike through the outskirts of their site and up to the Bald Spot. Thank you Grizzly Creek Ranch for your generosity and the chance for our campers to add to their camper experience while at Walton’s.
